Do you remember those commercials for cereal where they would say "part of a balanced breakfast" and then the picture would have cereal and a banana and milk and a glass of orange juice? Yikes! What part of that breakfast is balanced? That breakfast is a carb, with a carb, with a carb on top and then another carb to drink. How long does that breakfast really keep anyone full? Definitely not me and not many people I know either. Without any significant protein and no fat, a high carb breakfast like that is going to leave you feeling hungry so fast, on a good day. On a bad day, it is sending you on a blood sugar roller coaster, where your blood sugar is rising quickly, then crashing down and leaving you hangry (hungry + angry) and headed to the vending machine. What a way to start the day!
So, what should you eat instead? Check out some breakfast ideas below for a few ideas. Notice that I am including a good source of protein and some heart healthy fats along with carbs to keep you feeling fuller, longer. The majority of adults do not need a snack between breakfast and lunch unless you are waking up and having your breakfast really early in the morning. Consider doing a trial run with a few different breakfast ideas to see how you feel in between breakfast and lunch. Pay attention to your hunger, cravings and overall attitude and find something that makes you feel good!
Breakfast ideas:
scrambled eggs with 1 slice whole wheat toast (top toast with peanut butter or avocado) 🥑
Greek yogurt with berries and handful of sliced almonds or walnuts
Cottage cheese with pineapple (sprinkle cereal on top if you want some crunch)
2 slices whole wheat toast with peanut butter (extra credit if you top with hemp seeds or ground flax 😉)
If you must have cereal- 1 cup plain Cheerios with 1/2 cup milk, handful of blueberries, a few walnuts on top and 1 hardboiled egg on the side
